I think any wheelchair user is very used to being the only wheelchair user in the room, and in my experience able-bodied people definitely noticed something unusual when there’s more than one wheelchair user together – I definitely noticeable stares, comments and harassment when I’m with one or more other wheelchair users. And so much of that is by design.

It infuriates me how many places only have one wheelchair space. Pretty much all of my lecture theatres at uni only had one, none of the buses were I live have more than one wheelchair space (and I live in a rural area so often if there is another wheelchair user in the space you’ll have to wait three hours for the next bus).

From my experience what these people actually want is confirmation that their experiences were normal and correct and that it’s the world that has gone wrong. That’s why confronting them with the fact that actually how they were treated was literally abuse makes them so upset, they don’t want to acknowledge that they were (and often still are) victims of people and systems outside their control. They were raised with the mindset that to admit something hurt you was a weakness. They were raised to believe that suffering through hardship silently is a sign of good character and strength. They want to be praised for being so strong, not sympathised with for being so hurt, they just don’t know what to do with that massive shift in perspective

I want to take a moment to talk about transandrophobia and cisgender men. I’ve spoken a lot in the pass about cis women and other trans people who attack or dismiss transgender men for being men out of the fear of men or the fear of their daughters becoming men or the fear of lesbian lovers becoming men.

However, cis men also fear trans men’s manhood. Cis men often feel threatened by our existence, since they view us as a challenge to their identity and their manhood. Cis men are terrified of the concept that a “woman” can become a man. So often they are horrified by the concept of us growing cocks or getting srs, of use having facial hair, gaining muscle, behaving masculine or feminine, walking into the showers, their gym spaces, using the urinal, pissing on the side of the road, or just being in any way male. Cis men don’t just dislike that we’re trans, they actively dislike that we’re men, they fear us being men because if a “woman” can become a man, that challenges the structure of the patriarchy, it challenges the system, and it “perverts” the meaning of male and redefines manhood and masculinity. In doing so, we force cis men to consider these binaries and that scares them, we terrify them with the concept of “women” gaining access to male spaces where they might see them vulnerable.

if youre making any sort of “women experience x men experience y” statement, you should always pause and really ask yourself how trans* & intersex people fit into that statement to avoid falling into the trap of seeing gender/sex oppression as being entirely about the categories of “man” and “woman” (based around cis perisex experiences) with trans* & intersex people simply being shoved under either category, as if they are not actively targeted by the patriarchy & are equally important classes of gender/sex that need to be equally considered

If Black people get into competitive programs it’s because they don’t deserve to be there, AND if Black people don’t get into competitive programs it’s because they don’t deserve to be there. #WhiteInAmerica

Racists never tire of mental gymnastics or weaponizing laws to maintain their forms of affirmative action.

you do not have to be a trans man to go on testosterone. you do not have to be a trans woman to go on estrogen. whether you’re intersex, nonbinary, genderqueer, genderfluid, gender non conforming, multigender, a drag performer, crossdresser or genderfucker, if you want to go on HRT and it won’t interfere with your physical health, you can. testosterone is not for men and estrogen is not for women, hormones are not gendered

“ummmmm if u say that trans men and cis men have different life and gender experiences ur basically saying trans men aren’t real men so rly ur the transphobic one” that’s a lot of words for “i think trans men should have to neglect their unique needs in order to assimilate as much as possible into cis manhood so i don’t have to think for more than two seconds abt what i could be doing to unpack my cisnormative views of gender or the ways i should be offering my support to trans men.

as someone who used to consider themselves a cis man cis manhood sucks for everyone including cis men

most cis men are afraid of even trying on a dress, and when they do it’s always as a joke like the idea of a man wearing a dress is in of itself hilarious

yep! patriarchal ideas of cis manhood are a prison that everyone, including cis men, deserve to be free from.

Overcooling of offices reveals gender inequity in thermal comfort - Scientific Reports
Growth in energy use for indoor cooling tripled between 1990 and 2016 to outpace any other end use in buildings. Part of this energy demand
    Nature

TL;DR - offices (and presumably other workplaces) are often cooled to a range preferred by men, which many women find too cold.

Still doesn’t explain why she doesn’t adjust the thermostat at home, unless she just likes feeling cozy in a cardigan.

I blame @kate04us for the lit search.

… holy shit I am equal amounts impressed by the research and horrified by the results, oh my god.

If that’s bad, definitely don’t Google crash test dummies and seatbelt design.

Unfortunately, I’m already aware of that one. Not nearly as fatal, but lab coat design is a mess too.

Ugh. Was able to find a decent one at a uniform shop for micro, but I had one class where we were required to wear *their* lab coats and none of them fit even vaguely appropriately. Lots of drapey sleeves getting in all the fluids we were trying to avoid🫠. I imagine it’s an issue with institutional PPE everywhere.

It took me a long time to understand that I’m worthy even if I can’t work or “contribute” in a way that seems socially acceptable.

My disability does hold me back. And I am learning to accept that’s okay. I will do what I can but never at the sacrifice of my peace or health. I am just as worthy on days I don’t get out of bed as I am on days when I’m productive.

I am worthy. And you are worthy.
